Wabi Sabi
Wabi-sabi is a composite of two interrelated aesthetic concepts, wabi and sabi. A Japanese aesthetic philosophy that embraces imperfection, transience, and the beauty of natural authenticity.
Wabi may be translated as “subdued, austere beauty” while sabi means “rust patina”.
Wabi-sabi is derived from the Buddhist teaching of the three marks of existence, specifically impermanence, suffering and emptiness or absence of self-nature, however, the two were originally seen as distinct concepts.
Characteristics of wabi-sabi aesthetics and principles include asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy, and the appreciation of both natural objects and the forces of nature.
Overall, wabi-sabi offers a profound perspective on beauty and life, inviting us to embrace imperfection, appreciate the transient nature of existence, and find joy in the simplicity and authenticity of the present moment.
